Introducing the Laino!

So you’re a person who makes a lot of notes and you’ve gone through all kinds of note pads, note books, note cards, etc. What’s the perfect note taking system?

  • It’s handy enough to always have with you.

  • You can use your favorite writing instrument, or any other.

  • There’s no special size paper to run out of or have to buy.

  • It’s not a catastrophe if you lose it.

  • It’s cool.

Well now, based on these incontrovertible first principles, you have The Laino – brought to you by Masuda Law, LLC.

The Legendary Origin of the Laino

One of my first and best legal mentors is a great listener and crisp thinker, and would often be the only person to attend a meeting unaccessorized by a yellow pad or laptop or e-tablet. If an interesting idea arose around the table, he’d slide a piece of folded paper out of a pocket, jot down a word or two, and put it back in his pocket.

It was just a piece of lined paper, but the elegant thing was his precise folding pattern: vertically in half, then horizontally in thirds. I thought of it as a New Yorker thing, kind of like the classic NYC newspaper fold.

Ever since then I’ve been carrying around notepaper folded like that, but a few months ago I tried cutting some sleeves for my notes out of a manila folder. The sleeves worked great, keeping my notes from getting too crumply, and giving me a firmer surface to write on if I wasn’t at a table. I started referred to my folder as a “Laino,” after my mentor, and eventually thought it would be a nice promo piece for my law practice.

The Modern Edition

The thing that makes The Laino super special is that it’s finely die-cut and letterpressed by Shadi Ayoub at The 961 Collective. It also sports my firm’s elegant text logo designed by Katie Parland and Danielle Uva at Agnes Studio. Working with Agnes was the first best thing I did right when I started the firm.

Send me a note with a SASE and I’ll send you one! Todd Masuda, Masuda Law, LLC, 3000 Corydon Rd. Cleveland Heights, OH 44118.
